In March I attended the Sussex Property Networking Club (SPNC) for the first time, run by my friend Sean Toole. At the time I was just considering buying a small buy-to-let property locally. The guest speaker at SPNC that month was Maria Davies, It was Maria who awakened my interest in becoming a property investor. She outlined how she became a property investor, what to look out for when buying property – and the importance of Return On Investment (which I will explain in my next post).
It wasn’t until April when Phil Martin was the guest speaker at SPNC, that I had a light bulb moment and realised that becoming a property investor is the job I have been looking for in the last few years. Phil Martin went through various ways of buying and selling properties.
To be a successful property investor, a person needs to have the following 2 key attributes:
- Good people skills – I am a people person and enjoy helping people
- Financial literacy – I am financially intelligent (I’ll explain these terms in my next post. Please do not be offended by them).
So why have I started a journey to becoming a good property investor?
I am not going to become a property investor overnight. I’ve got a lot to learn. I have the aptitude, desire and relish the challenge! I’m going to have one or two hurdles to overcome. If I fall flat on my face (it won’t be the first time!), I will just stand back up and continue my journey.
Why £1 million? It’s a good target to have. Once I reach a million I’ll hopefully be good at buying property. My goal is not to become as rich as possible.
My goal (and what I am challenged by) is becoming a good property investor. I am not a materialistic person. When I make a substantial amount of money, I’ll give a portion of it to charity (and my family/firiends).
In my next post, I’ll mention the two books I’ve recently read (one of which, everyone in the World should read) and I’ll explain the couple of terms I’ve mentioned above. After which, I’ll take a break from blogging about property and talk about the things below!
Don’t worry if you’re not a fan of property investment (neither am I now, after writing such a long post about it!), I am going to blog about a whole load of other stuff:
- About me, my philosophy in life and how I don’t let my CP get in the way of anything I want to do.
- My full-time job at BT
- My passion of radio – and my Saturday job
- Music, current affairs, politics, comedy and lots more!
Future posts won’t be as long as this one!

Intriguing stuff Patrick. Looking forward to the next episode. More pictures please!
